Welcome to the Home of the Fighting Tigers

Welcome to Capitan Middle School, a community school within the Capitan Municipal Schools District in the heart of historic Lincoln County, New Mexico! Combining a balanced core curriculum with extracurricular activities, sports, and clubs, we prepare students in the 6th, 7th, and 8th grades for community involvement and life success.

Founded in the late 1800s and situated between the beautiful Capitan and Sacramento mountains, the Village of Capitan enjoys vast outdoor recreation opportunities that our temperate weather affords, breathtaking scenery, and a diverse art community. As part of this community, we at Capitan Middle School take great pride in our part of honoring the spirit of the west and developing our community’s future leaders.

We invite you to explore our new website; familiarize yourself with our school, our teachers, and our Tiger Pride! Let us know if you have any questions or would like to volunteer!

A Message from Our Principal

Dear Capitan Tiger Family,

I wanted to take this opportunity to let you all know how excited we are to start this new school year with you even though it isn’t the format that we all wished for. As you are aware, the Governor in conjunction with the Public Education Department, announced that all schools in New Mexico would start the school year remotely online with specific grade levels being phased in by October. We know this isn’t the ideal situation and are well aware of the frustration experienced by our families and students in these difficult times.

Capitan Schools has worked hard to formulate a reentry plan to protect our staff and students during this pandemic, while still meeting the emotional and educational needs of our students. Because of the pandemic and school closures, much of the prep work that gets done in the spring and summer was delayed as the nation and states struggled with developing plans and procedures pushed out to the various agencies like Education. Schools all over the nation are catching up and developing what education will look like in the coming year as we go.

Please read my complete letter for guidelines and things to consider for students and families as they take part in remote learning. Please read this message in its entirety. As new information becomes available, I will continue to update you.

Thank you for your continued support of Capitan schools,

Shelli Montoya
